Cloud computing 101 for Businesses
The disruption of cloud computing to the IT channel
how does a hosted virtual desktop work?
a non-disruptive alternative to desktop PCs
Using a hosted desktop is NO different from using a regular PC. In fact, you can print to your printer at home or in the office, install software and customise just as you would with your normal machine. The only difference is that the data and operating system are running on our powerful infrastructure and being presented to you remotely. All you need is an internet connection at your location or, if you're on the road, you can use 3G mobile or an iPhone

Benefits
  • Save management hassle
  • Access from any location
  • Get free MS Office and upgrades
  • Lower cost than PC
  • Secure, backed-up and patched
  • Connect from any device
  • A hosted desktop is a fully-functioning remote workstation. Instead of being held on local hardware, all software and data is housed in our state-of-the-art data centres. This data is then sent via the internet to an end-user’s workstation (such as a PC or thin client), whilst industry-standard encryption (as used by the likes of Amazon and HSBC) ensures that no information can be accessed by external parties. Keystrokes and mouse movements are then relayed from the workstation to our data centres.

This is an entirely seamless process and the end user’s Windows experience is identical to that offered by a traditional desktop PC, allowing interaction with the exact same applications in the exact same way. You‘d never notice the difference!

All the functionality you’d expect is available and the environment is personalised, meaning you can install applications, store your data, print on your home or office printer and so on. The virtue of a hosted desktop is that ThinkGrid manages, backs up and looks after the environment for you; plus it’s running on highly available grid technology, offering you almost infinite power and resources at the touch of a button.

    Connecting to your hosted desktop
You can connect to your hosted desktop from any location you choose, as long as you have an internet or network connection. Simply browse to our login portal from your laptop, desktop or thin client and the hosted desktop appears as if it was running locally on your machine. You can print documents and use your applications just as if the machine was under your desk.

For those wanting to further reduce costs and remove management of PCs in their office, switching to thin clients is a great way to do so and can be easily added on to the service. You can also prolong the life of your existing equipment because you are now only using it as a way to access ThinkGrid's portal.
